One of my friend asked me wether I have a boyfriend or not. I said no but he didn't believe it. So what do I do? Should I say "no" in Korean so he will believe me? Do you know how to say "yes" and "no" in Korean?. This time we will learn about Yes No question in Korean so we will be able to say "yes" or "no" in Korean language. Are you ready, guys?
"yes" is "네" (ne) and "no" is "아니요" (aniyo). In Korean, "네" is the same as agreement, and "아니요" to express disagreement. Look at the following example :
Q: 사과 좋아해요?
(sagwa johahaeyo?)
Do you like apples?
A : 네
(ne)
Yes
Q : 커피 좋아해요?
(keophi johahaeyo?)
Do you like coffee?
A : 아니요
(aniyo)
No
Q : 커피 안좋아해요?
(keophi an johahaeyo?)
You don't like coffee?
A : 네
(ne)
Yes
In English, when someone ask "You don't like coffee?", we answer "No, I don't like coffee" if we really don't like coffee. But in Korean, the answer for that question is "Yes, I don't like coffee".
네 is not only used to say "yes", "that's right" or expressing agreement. Look at the following conversation:
Conversation 1 :
A : You know what, yesterday I went to the mall.
B : 네
A : I bought this bag. Isn't it cute?
B : 네
A : But it's a bit too expensive. Do you know how much it was? It was 800 dollars !
B : 네 ??
A : So I can't save my money this month.
B : 네...
In this conversation 1, 네 is used to express surprised and "I see..".
Conversation 2 :
A : I love you
B : 네 ?
A : I said I love you.
B : 네 ?
A : Ahh... forget it!
In this conversation 2, 네 means "what did you say?" or "pardon?".
In order to express more strongly and clearly that you are agree of something, you can put 맞아요 (majayo) after 네.
Conversation 3 :
A : I think the weather today is really hot.
B : 네, 맞아요 (Yes, that's right)
Well, that's all our lesson today about Yes No question in Korean. See you at the next lesson ^_^
